1. As you head out to vote today, consider the price of your vote: Obama spent more than $639 million on his campaign. McCain is estimated to have spent $335 million. (Federal Election Commission)
It’s worth noting too that Obama announced his candidacy on February 10, 2007, almost 21 months before election day, and 2 1/2 months before McCain announced (April 25, 2007).
Yes, our presidential race is costing more and starting earlier every four years. Compare those dates above with John Kerry’s official announcement in September 2003, only 13 months from election day. And, the June 1999 announcements for Gore and Bush, just 15 months from their fateful election day debacle.
Think all that is sickening? The National Retail Federation says Americans just spent $6 billion on Halloween.
Seriously? Go do your civic duty and vote. Fortunately, it’s free.
2. Back to social media and stuff… saw this post on The Customer Collective from Jacob Morgan on “Social Media Myths.” On his list of falsehoods, “It’s too late to use social media.” As David Meerman Scott pointed out to the Social Media Breakfast Minneapolis St. Paul last week, when he started blogging in 2004 he thought he was late into the game. Truth is, if you start a corporate blog, podcast, open a Twitter account or create a Facebook page today – you’re actually very, very early compared to what businesses and individuals are doing.
3. Mary Davis on Blissfully Domestic talked to Sarah Evans (@prsarahevans), creator of the “Top 50 Tweeples” list about that, and her advice for maximizing Twitter.
4. Chris Brogan is offering a free eBook, “Fishing Where the Fish Are,” that offers a nice overview on how social media can help a business reach into the buying cycle and tie in to traditional marketing.
5. Finally today, I’ll point you to a post by Doriano “Paisano” Carta on Mashable with some fun stuff on the Web for the whole family to try out. It’s titled “35+ Sites for Web Savvy Families.” It’s a nice collection. Specifically, I hadn’t heard of Glubble before, so I am planning on looking into it more.
